Good and Evil

Does Scientology recognize good and evil?

Yes, in Scientology, a very clear distinction is made between good and evil. Those actions which enhance survival on the majority of the eight aspects or dynamics of life are good, and those which destroy or deny these aspects of life are evil. Scientologists strive to make decisions that will enhance the majority of these dynamics of life.
Good may be defined as constructive. Evil may be defined as destructive.

Governments and Supporting them

Hitler, Stalin, Castro... you can list all the names in recent history that used the power of government to suit their own ends at the expense of the many. Some covertly, some overtly but the results are the same.

Support a Government Designed and Run for All the People is the 10th precept for The Way To Happiness. We as citizens of our particular country have more say so in how our government is run than we think. When it gets too much to take, we either succumb to it and becomes slaves or we go way over to the other end and try to change government through violence. Neither one are very effective in the long run.

There is a middle ground in between where you can take measures to have the government run as they should. One step is to have government taught at earlier ages in schools. There is
The Constitution of the United States which is a great source reference. Not many people have taken the time to read it, even once. Another reference is The Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Knowing what your rights are can help ensure you have them.

Next, realize and take notice when a government IS working hard for all its people and support them. People who have other intentions would attack that government and try to weaken them. Our support would help keep then going.

Sometimes change is needed and when warranted, should be done. It should be done through the process set forth in that country. Overthrow is a last resort but in either case we should ensure the government we are electing are not as bad or worse than the one we are replacing.

L. Ron Hubbard: Humanitarian

To say that L. Ron Hubbard was "just a Science Fiction writer" would be as silly as saying that
Dr Martin Luther King Jr was "just a protester".

Here is a man that was fully professional on over 25 different fields. But more than that, he was a Humanitarian.

He spent decades researching and developing working solutions in Drug Rehabilitation, Education, Criminal reform and Human Rights. Millions have benefited from these discoveries and uses.

In wrapping up our series on help this week, there is a salute to a person who truly helped his fellow man.

Organizations that help

We have been talking about help and helping others this past week. There are many organizations that time and time again have come to the fore when their help is needed.

The American Red Cross have been the standard on helping for years. Not only do they offered their services in times of disaster, They offer training in CPR, do blood drives and help families.

Amnesty International has been a voice against human rights abuse around the globe for decades.

CCHR has also been a voice against human rights abuses, but more in the field of Mental Health. One of their objectives is to get the field of mental health practicing under the law like every one else. Check out their site.

And of course there is the Scientology Volunteer Ministers. Even though the Volunteer Minister program has been around for years, they really came into their own during the September 11, 2001 attack. Since that time, the "Yellow Shirts" have been at almost every major disaster that has taken place since.

They are more than people that help during disasters. As the name states, they are Ministers. Find out the other services they offer.

There are just a few of many that really help others. They deserve your support and your help.

Help Kick

We got on a "Help Kick" this week. So I will continue it with another comment on the subject by L. Ron Hubbard;

"Now basically, as long as things help you and you help things and you know who is doing what, you're all right. I mean there can be any quantity of help. Who cares? It's when you lose sight of who is helping who and when you start refusing help, when you start refusing to give help, when you start refusing to get help, that things start going wrong"

What's wrong with help?

Maybe this quote from L. Ron Hubbard will explain it:

" See, you know what help is. Help is to assist. But these people who make you fail don't have that definition. They don't have any such definition of help... Well, apparently, the violence that greets any honest endeavor to help one's fellow man is based on the fact, no,no we mustn't have one's fellow man helped because that means to kill everybody." LRH

From the Lecture "Some Aspects of Help" 30 June 1960

Remember that when some people criticize you for wanting to help others!

More on Helping Others

Here is a great quote from L. Ron Hubbard on Help.

..."Why are we alive?" Well, apparently, apparently, the reason we're alive is to help.....you can tell how dead the person is by how little they can help..." LRH

From the Lecture "Some Aspects of Help" 30 June 1960

Watch the video on the Scientology Video Channel was see what other Scientologists have to say on helping others.

Scientology and helping others

Why do Scientologists want to help people?

For several reasons. First, because Scientologists themselves have been helped enormously — and they want others to share the same successes. Second, Scientologists understand that life is not lived alone. An individual has more than just one dynamic (the urge to survive as self). He wants to help his family, his groups, mankind itself and living things survive better.

Illegal Acts

What is considered an illegal act? It is one that is prohibited by the official rule of law. When you commit an illegal act, It lays you open to attack by the state, government etc... Also, if that act is serious, it leads a person to not living life but instead being always "on guard" in hope not to get picked up by the authorities.

Don't do anything illegal is Way to Happiness precept #9. A simple way of looking at it would be not doing anything you wouldn't want to have done to you.

Who's Boss?

Does Scientology believe in mind over matter?

In practicing Scientology you address yourself — not your mind, not your body, but you.
Scientologists have found that the spirit is potentially superior to material things, and that the spirit, i.e., you, if cleansed of past traumas, transgressions and aberrations, can make miraculous changes in the physical universe that would not otherwise be possible.

Worthy of Life

If you look around in society, there are some people that have little value for lives of others. Life cannot be that bad to where you have to murder innocent people because of your drama you have in your life. Honest people have a right to live.

"Do Not Murder" is Way to Happiness precept #8. There is a big difference between the two words "Kill" and "Murder". A law against killing would rule out all self defense. If you had a mad person shooting or harming people at random and you had the chance to end it, The RIGHT thing to do would be to shoot or harm that person even at the risk of killing them.

"Murder" is another thing entirely. The definition of murder is, "The unlawful killing of one (or more) human being by another, especially with malice aforethought". Some people have gotten away with murder by saying they were insane. It stands to reason that anyone who would solve their problems (real or imagined) by murdering another is insane. That is a solution done by the stupid and the evil. Communication is a far more effective weapon and solution than murder.

L Ron Hubbard Part 2

In Celebration of L. Ron Hubbard's birthday this month, here is another story about him and his early years in Washington State. L. Ron Hubbard joined the Boy Scouts in Tacoma, Washington as part of Tacoma Troop 31. In 1924, 13 year old L.Ron Hubbard became the Youngest Eagle Scout in America and most of that was spent in the scouts in the State of Washington.

Living With the Truth

One of the biggest obstacles in seeking the truth of something is false data. The data can be intentionally or unintentionally put out and that prevents a person from getting the true data.

One can solve the problems of existence only when he has true data

The Way to Happiness Precept #7 is Seek to Live With the Truth. You have seen how harmful lies have damaged reputation or careers. Only by seeking and living with the truth, no matter what it may be, can you achieve a way to happiness.

Scientology and God

Here is a great question I found the the What is Scientology site that covers god or the supreme being.

Does Scientology have a concept of God?
Most definitely. Scientology affirms the existence of a Supreme Being, although its dogma is unique and does not include the worship of one. Scientology believes that only through total spiritual enlightenment can one then truly discover and understand the Supreme Being.

The Future in Seattle

Scientology will be expanding in Seattle. The Church of Scientology, Washington State has purchased a new building and will be doing renovations soon in preparation to move in. We also purchased a spot for the Life Improvement Center which will be in the heart of downtown Seattle.

We also have our local missions which is the Mission of Seattle, The Eastside Mission and the Mission of Bellingham up north. This will give us a base to expand to other places around the State. The future looks bright in Seattle.

L. Ron Hubbard, Part 1

Since this is the month of L. Ron Hubbard's birth (March 13th), we are going to do some highlights of his achievements throughout the month. Most people don't not know that Mr Hubbard spent a good portion of his early years right here in the Pacific Northwest.

If you have read the book Dianetics: The Original Thesis, you would know about Ron's breakthrough discovery for the common denominator of existence which is SURVIVE ! No matter what else man is trying to do, in whatever culture, he is trying to survive.

Do you know where that discovery was made? Right there in Port Orchard, Washington which is across Puget Sound from Seattle! One of the biggest discoveries in mankind done right in own backyard.
It's our duty in Seattle to keep that legacy alive and going. Stop in the Seattle Mission or any of the churches in the area and find out for yourself.

Handbook for Preclears

This is an excellent book for scientologists who are on there way to higher states of existance. For non-scientologists, it has some very useful information to apply to life. An eariler companion book you can use is the book "Self Analysis" (see Jan 5th 08 blog).

Handbook for Preclears
The “Fifteen Acts” of Advanced Procedure and Axioms are paralleled by the fifteen Self-processing Acts given in Handbook for Preclears. Moreover, this book contains several essays giving the most expansive description of the Ideal State of Man. Discover why behavior patterns become so solidly fixed; why habits seemingly can’t be broken; how decisions long ago have more power over a person than his decisions today; and why a person keeps past negative experiences in the present. It’s all clearly laid out on the Chart of Attitudes — a milestone breakthrough that complements the Chart of Human Evaluation — plotting the ideal state of being and one’s attitudes and reactions to life. In self-processing, Handbook for Preclears is used in conjunction with Self Analysis.

The Life Continuum
Besieged with requests for lectures on his latest breakthroughs, Ron replied with everything they wanted and more at the Second Annual Conference of Dianetic Auditors. Describing the technology that lies behind the self-processing steps of the Handbook — here is the how and why of it all: the discovery of Life Continuum — the mechanism by which an individual is compelled to carry on the life of another deceased or departed individual, generating in his own body the infirmities and mannerisms of the departed. Combined with auditor instruction on use of the Chart of Attitudes in determining how to enter every case at the proper gradient, here, too, are directions for dissemination of the Handbook and hence, the means to begin wide-scale clearing.
This book, as well as all of the other books described eariler are available in out bookstore. Call (206) 365-1884 for more information.

Scientology as a Religion #2

You hear people call Scientology or other "minor" religions a cult. If you asked them the definition of the word, most couldn't answer it. Here is that question answered from the book: What is Scientology?

Is Scientology a cult?

No. It is a religion in the fullest sense of the word.

“Cult” is usually meant in a disparaging sense to imply a secret or closed group with limited membership and mysterious beliefs. Religious scholars point out that the term has become almost meaningless, since its modern use reflects a growing prejudice against all religions. For example, a government report in Belgium labeled the Hasidic Jews and even the YWCA as “cults.” The French Parliament included Baptists on their list.
Religions that grow and endure do so to the degree that they assist people in their spiritual lives. To fulfill this role, the scripture of Scientology is fully codified, broadly published and available to anyone, and its churches and missions are always open to the public.
Scientology is unique in that it does not require or tell anyone to “believe” anything. Rather, Scientology believes every individual should think for himself. In Scientology, what is true for the individual is only what he has observed personally and knows is true for him. Scientology is not authoritarian, but offers a technology one can use and then decide whether it works for him.

Setting a Good Example

Have you ever heard the saying. "You are judged by your actions" ? Well, even if it apprears in society that what you "say" or what people say about you is how you are judged, your actions speak louder than any words and that is what you are truly judged by. Scientology is a perfect example of this. Despite what is said about us, a lot more judge and respect us by our actions.

Precept #6 in the book The Way to Happiness is about Setting a Good Example. If you do things (by your actions) that are for the benefit of yourself and the majority in your area, others cannot help but be influenced by this, no matter what they say.

So let your actions speak !

A couple of announcements

March is here and we want to start it with a few announcements.

We are always looking for new people to join our team on staff at the Mission. If you ever wanted to do something with a group that makes a difference in the world, we can use you. Whether you are a Scientologist or not, you can do something to help forward our purpose as stated in the Aims of Scientology. It's not easy but as of any worthwhile thing, the rewards are great. Contact Cheri Rodriguez of Diane Gagon at (206) 365-1884 for more information.

March is also the month we celebrate the birth and life of the founder of Dianetics and Scientology, L. Ron Hubbard. We will have a big worldwide celebration and the local one in Seattle will be held later on in the month. Date, location and time will be announced soon.

You are invited to stop in and find out what Scientology is all about. If you have heard good things about us, come in and find out about it. And if you've heard bad things that has colored your opinion of us, come in also. You either have a new awareness of what we do or you'll find out for yourself what those bad things are :). Reading stuff on the internet, other media sources (like this Blog) and word of mouth is fine but it doesn't replace being there.
